EPSON Semiconductor has developed and recently started mass production of S1D15106, Epson's first high gray segmented LCD driver for instrument panel display systems. Epson plans to produce 100000 new drivers per month.

As vehicles gain more features and functions, the amount of information that needs to be displayed on the dashboard screen is also increasing. On the other hand, larger displays with higher clarity will increase costs. Therefore, especially in emerging countries, the number of combination instrument displays using TFT LCD for things that require display flexibility and segmented LCD for fixed items such as indicators and icons has increased.

S1D15106 is a segmented LCD driver that can be directly connected to a microcontroller. The image data transmitted from the microcontroller can be displayed on the segment display without the need for external memory. Static driving can achieve high contrast, while pulse width modulation (PWM) can display 16 levels of grayscale, making this driver very suitable for visualizing speedometers and tachometers.

In addition, the driver circuit has display safety functions, such as detecting segment/common output issues (open circuit/short circuit), and if the line from the driver output to the display is open and abnormal display is detected, the display driver output terminal can be restored through the control of the microcontroller by switching. The safety function of the driver circuit supports the construction of highly reliable display systems. This driver program meets the strict quality requirements of automotive products. It complies with AEC-Q100 and can operate at temperatures up to 105 ℃.

Epson strives to develop the forefront of the industry and promote a circular economy by applying efficient, compact, and precise technologies developed over the years to address challenges. These technologies can save energy, produce smaller products, and improve accuracy and precision, enabling Epson to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which will bring a better and more sustainable future for everyone.

Epson is also seeking to utilize its device technology to achieve a smart society. To this end, the company will continue to develop controllers and drivers for various in car display systems that require high resolution and safety features, and can improve the performance of customer products.
